Overview
Traded under the name Favia, these are massive, mounding corals with rounded, separate corallites, each with its own wall. Many Indo-Pacific species once placed in Favia are now classified under Dipsastraea, but the name Favia is still widely used in the trade.
They are among the hardiest stony corals available, with excellent colour variety.
Appearance and colour
Each corallite is a distinct circle, giving the colony a honeycomb-like pattern. Colours range from greens and browns to bright reds, oranges and multi-coloured pieces with contrasting centres and walls.
Care in the aquarium
Moon corals do well under moderate light and moderate flow, placed low to mid-level on the reef. At night they extend feeding tentacles and sweepers, which is the best time to target feed small meaty foods. Leave some space around the colony to avoid stinging neighbours.
