Blastomussa wellsi

Plump, colourful polyps that grow into dense clusters: a hardy, easy-going LPS for lower light.

Blasto Coral (Blastomussa wellsi) – Live Corals Australia

Overview

Blastomussa wellsi forms clusters of individual, rounded polyps, each sitting on its own short skeletal tube. As the colony grows, new polyps bud off and the cluster fills out into a tight, colourful mound.

It is one of the more forgiving LPS corals, which makes it a reliable choice for retailers supplying both newer and experienced hobbyists.

Appearance and colour

Fully inflated, the polyps are smooth and fleshy with a distinct mouth in the centre. Common colours include reds, pinks, greens and two-tone pieces with contrasting rims and centres.

Care in the aquarium

Blastos prefer lower light and gentle flow, and often colour up best in partially shaded areas. Strong light or flow can keep the polyps from inflating. They do not need heavy feeding, but small meaty foods offered occasionally will encourage faster growth. With a peaceful temperament, they can sit closer to neighbours than many other LPS.

Responsibly sourced

How we source Blastomussa wellsi

Our corals are collected on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, from the northern areas of the Reef down to Bundaberg, our home. Our diving collection vessels are equipped for long-distance travel, so we can find the best corals and keep them in pristine condition on the way to our holding facility.

Jeremy leads our harvesting team, which is extensively trained in safe, sustainable collecting techniques. We work to a strictly limited quota across broad reef areas within specific zones, taking small numbers of corals of limited size and premium quality and leaving the majority of the coral intact.

At our Bundaberg holding facility, Travis and the team fine-tune feeding, lighting and husbandry so every coral is in top condition before it is carefully packed and shipped. Our growing aquaculture program supports our vision of offering a 100% aquacultured source of premium corals.
